MARINERS HANG ON TO WIN SLUG-FEST AGAINST ANGELS, 8-6

Saturday, April 9th
Kingdome
CALIFORNIA      000 220 200 - 6 10 4 Simpson (L), Monge, Hartzell and Humphrey
SEATTLE           206 000 00X - 8   9  1 Wheelock (1-0), Montague (S) and Stinson
The Mariners roughed up Wayne Simpson (3 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 7 ER) and knocked out the righty with a 6 run 3rd,
but they had to hang on to their dear lives as they defeated the Angels 8-6 for their 3rd straight win.
Steve Braun and Ruppert Jones had two RBI apiece while Danny Meyer, Hugh Fitzpatrick and newcomer
Carlos Lopez also knocked in a run for Seattle.  Gary Wheelock threw a no-hitter
for 3 2/3 innings, and hung on to pick up the W, going 6 innings, allowing 4 runs, 7 hits, 3 walks while striking
out 6.  John Montague (3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 SO) picked up the save, but he also had a rocky time going
 through
the California order.  The Halos' top player tonight was CF Bruce Bochte, who stroked two homers
and drove in five of the 6 runs for the team.
Hugh Fitzpatrick was 2 for 4 with an RBI tonight.
Break up the M's, their record is 3-2! But they are going to get another cold dose of reality on
Sunday, April 10th when Glenn Abbott (0-0) has to deal with Angel ace Frank Tanana at the Kingdome.
We will see if Seattle is really ready to face Tanana coming up...
